CFD with SU2: Isentropic Supersonic Nozzle Flow

Below are the links to download the GEO, SU2, and CFG files that I use in my video for the supersonic isentropic flow in a rocket nozzle (this mesh will be used in all my rocket nozzle simulations).  You don’t need the GEO file unless you want to load it into GMSH and change the output options of the SU2 mesh file.  Right now, the mesh file uses a characteristic length of 0.05.  If you want a finer mesh, you can decrease this value.  If you want a coarser mesh, you can increase this value.

  1. Thanks a lot Josh. I used the same mesh but when I ran the simulation in SU2 it results in an error “Orthoganization Failed, Linear Solver Diverged”. When I looked into its Mesh Quality Metrics, the min and max orthogonality angle were -nan. I would like to know did you face any such problems during the simulation of the nozzle in SU2? Do you have any idea how to resolve it? Once again, thanks a lot for your videos, it has been really helpful.

  2. I have run into an issue with these files using SU2 version 5.0.0. I kept getting a CL and CD that diverge horribly (+/- 10000 for both). I tried making the mesh a bit coarser, at 0.1 instead of 0.05. This did not help if I kept the inlet mach at 1. However, when I increased the inlet mach to 1.001, the CL and CD didn’t diverge, but I was left with fairly messy plots that didn’t look like what was featured in the video – especially next to the throat of the nozzle.
I hope to still search for the error but wanted to reach out if you already had encountered something like this.

    • same problem… i have also used SU2 version 5.0.0 to validate the results. but i couldn’t. do you have any idea on this issue. can you please help us?
